A basic inspection referred to as a Level 1 inspection is a visual evaluation without the use of any special devices. A service technician will examine all the fundamental structures that are accessible with a hand held flashlight to see to it that there is no damage or wear and tear. They will also inspect to make sure there is nothing blocking the chimney such as birds nests or debris. If you have never had any kind of problems in the past with routine use of your fireplace, this is the suggested inspection.
An advanced assessment, or Level 2 inspection, is much more in depth. This will include everything that is completed with a standard inspection with the addition of a video camera or other device to examine the whole flue as well as interior chimney structure. It would also include an evaluation of the attic and also any locations surrounding the chimney.
A Level 2 inspection is the kind of evaluation carried out during a property purchase for the sale or purchase of a residential or commercial property. It's also suggested if you have had recent damage, quakes, chimney fires, or any type of event which may have impacted the structure of the chimney. If you're preparing to have a chimney relining or you've made a lot of changes in the way you utilize your fireplace, then the more in-depth assessment is also suggested.
A Level 3 inspection includes all the assessments performed in Level 1 and 2 inspections, yet also includes the removal of portions of the chimney or building such as the chimney crown or masonry. This type of inspection is just done in severe situations when it is absolutely needed in order to verify the safety of the chimney.
The National Fire Protection Association suggests that at minimum a Level 1 inspection be performed yearly and maintained as needed.
